In the year 2012, Patrick d’Aulan -founder of Alta Vista Winery and raised in a family dedicated to wine production since 150 years- and Didier Debono -a native Burdeos enologist and Chief Enologist of Alta Vista Winery since 2002- founded Altamana Winery in the Maule Region with the sole objective to relive past Malbec vines planted in the last century by the wine industry pioners of the south of Chile.

To optimize the care of the vineyard, count Patrick d’Aulan and Didier Debono joined José Manuel Donoso and Laurent Teillet, two renowned wine producers in the Maule Region.

This particular legacy translates in a unique winery created to discover a cultural blend; wines from the new and old continent, chilean wines with a french soul.

There were 26,000 bottles made of this fantastic vintage, only 3,000 bottles remain which have evolved into a greater wine sinces tasted 1 or 2 years ago. Now we can have 1,000 to1,200 bottles to be enjoyed in British Columbia.

The new vintages of the single-vineyard reds were not yet bottled, so I only tasted a still wine, the 2015 Grande Reserve Malbec from Maule, a blend from their two vineyards, Constanza and Corinto, both dry-farmed. The vinification followed the classical recipe with 25 days of total maceration. Seventy-five percent of the wine matured in used French oak barrels for nine months. It’s still quite spicy and smoky, marked by the oak, with the floral character of the Malbec in the background. The palate is quite tasty, with oak-related flavors that give it a commercial profile. It’s nicely crafted, but I’d love to see it with a little less oak. Give it a little more time in bottle. Very good value. 26,000 bottles were filled in September 2016.

90 POINTS Wine Enthusiast DATE PUBLISHED 5/1/2019 Altamana 2015 Grande Reserve Malbec (Maule Valley) Ripe, slightly desiccated aromas of prune, raisin and blackberry include a horsey note. A full-bodied palate weighs in as mildly flabby and heavy, while dark, charred berry and toast flavors are blackened. On the finish, chalky dryness lends focus to an otherwise ripe finish. Drink through 2023. MICHAEL SCHACHNER

French expertise combines with Chilean soil and history to give this Malbec purity and balance, with complexity, depth and concentration, owed to the old vines. 60 year old dry farmed vines benefit from stark diurnal temperature variations yield the superb quality grapes for this wine. Primary fermentation was performed in 28 days with long maceration in small cement tanks. Aged in French oak for 9 months. The wine was not filtered nor clarified prior to bottling in order to preserve the wine’s authentic character.
